February 11, 2012                   Map & Compass and GPS Basics for Geocaching

This is an information filled clinic that should appeal to hikers, Scouts, paddlers, and anyone interested in getting started in geocaching.  We will begin with some basic map and compass skills.  We know this may sound old-fashioned, but the more you know about map and compass basics, the easier it will be to understand your GPS and getting started with geocaching.  Plus, what happens if modern technology fails!

Anyway, once we have you acclimated to map and compass, we will move on to the basics of GPS and geocaching.  We’ll provide compasses, worksheets, and GPS units.  The clinic will also include some work outdoors with your new-found skills.

With the help of representatives from York County Parks, join us for an afternoon hike along the Susquehanna.  Before the hike, we’ll get a preview of the winter waterfowl that inhabit our area, as well as descriptive information on how to spot these birds.  Then we’ll head outside for a leisurely hike along the river looking for glimpses of these winter visitors.  Who knows what we’ll see.  Bring binoculars and field guides.  Please note that this FREE program does not include lunch.

Welcome local author and historian Scott Mingus, Sr. for his Civil War presentation based on his book “Flames beyond Gettysburg – The Confederate Expedition to the Susquehanna River, June 1863”.  We’ll hear about the Confederates mission to seize the vital Susquehanna River Bridge between Wrightsville and Columbia.  We’ll also learn about the capture and ransom of York, and the activities around the railroads and Hanover Junction.  This important story will help us realize the vital part our area and its residents played in a turning point of the war.  To further your experience, sign up for our Civil War hike led by Scott on Sat., March 3, 2012.

Local resident and archaeologist Jan Klinedinst has long been studying the numerous Native American sites along the Lower Susquehanna.  She will help us lead our Indian hike on the Native Lands Trail portion of the Mason-Dixon Trail.  We will visit the sites of our “Andastes” villages and other prehistoric and historic settlements along the Susquehanna.  This will be a fascinating hike retracing the steps of those who occupied the river hills centuries before us.

March 2, 2012        Lower Susquehanna River Commerce Heads into the 20th Century

Ever wonder what this area looked like before our beautiful recreational setting of today?  Welcome Hollis Bedell from the Lower Windsor Area Historical Society as she unfolds the business and industrial development of Long Level and points south on the Susquehanna.  Through pictures and narrative, she’ll show us how this area looked in the period of 1860 through 1910 – a true commercial heyday on the Lower Susquehanna.  This is sure to be an interesting evening leaving us with insight into how our own spot on the Susquehanna has evolved in modern times.

Sat., March 3, 2012      Civil War Comes to Wrightsville Hike with Scott Mingus Sr.

Area Civil War historian Scott Mingus, Sr. will expand on his Feb. 17th Evening Rendezvous program at Shank’s Mare, with a guided hike through the borough of Wrightsville.  We will re-trace the movements of the Confederate troops as they approach the borough along with the placements of the Union soldiers as they guard the strategic bridge over the Susquehanna River.  This hike will give you first hand glimpses on the activities just prior to the burning of the Wrightsville Bridge and the Battle of Gettysburg.  What a great opportunity to appreciate the history that lies right in our own backyard!

Welcome Paul Nevin as he presents his program on the Native American Rock Art located on Lake Aldred of the Susquehanna.  Paul has spent over 20 years studying these ancient rock drawings.  He’ll have slides and lots of stories about the Native Americans who left this history and delve into the spiritual meaning of the art.  To further your adventures, join us on our Native American Rock Art Paddle Tour as Paul co-leads our summer paddle tours to view several of the actual rocks located in the river.

Due to the success of our Spring and Fall paddling trips to the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, we have decided to offer both trips this Spring.  Accommodations for the Janes Island trip are in rustic but comfortable cabins, while the Chincoteague trip offers a very comfortable beach house.  Paddling on both trips is great!  For full details and pricing, please call for trip sheets.

April 20, 2012                           The 1801 Mapping of the Wild & Raging Susquehanna

Featuring June Lloyd

Local historian and archivist June Lloyd will introduce us to the amazing Benjamin Henry Latrobe.  While he is best know as one of the fathers of American architecture, his work surveying the Lower Susquehanna in 1801 has more impact on area residents today.  Latrobe described the Turkey Hill rapids or falls as “most formidable”.  June will tell us about the trials and tribulations of this daunting job of mapping the steep banks and rocky spillways of the Susquehanna before the building of the dams that now form Lake Clarke, Lake Aldred and Conowingo Pond.  June will treat us to pictures of the early maps and a variety of information from the York County Historical Trust archives.

April 28, 2012     Earth Day Celebration

Sahd’s Salvage, Columbia with Columbia Public Library
Earth Day celebration at Sahd’s Salvage. Library members have been sharing stories with all ages for the past few years now and always enjoy it. Families pick up a “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” passport booklet, in which different activities are completed throughout the morning. Activities include crafts, storytime, tours of the recycling facility, and even an obstacle course! After completing each activity, the passport is stamped or initialed. Once all activities are completed, your child earns a free Rita’s Italian ice. Other activities include an aluminum can collection contest and there will be plenty of good food with proceeds benefitting the Columbia Food Bank. MAH ART MART on the lawn. Our first Marietta Day was a great success. We had a steady croud of happy buyers and festival goers inside and outside the Art House until 5pm. MAH will be promoting this popular event annualy. Email us to receive info for next year's event. Our space rental is 20.00. The borough charges 35.00. RENT FROM US AND ENJOY THE FESTIVITIES. The Jamboree is located in front of the St. John’s Herr Estate Apartments, rain or shine. Along with the Blueberry Jamboree, St. John’s Herr Estate is holding a “Fill That Bus” event. The Jamboree kicks-off a month long collection of school supplies for the St. Paul Episcopal Church Columbia Food Bank. Hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center

The course for this event is a popular one – it crosses the Susquehanna River via the Veterans Memorial Bridge (Rt. 462) between Lancaster & York County which is closed to vehicular traffic during the event.  River Run begins in Wrightsville at 8:30 am and finishes in “record time” against this scenic backdrop.  Pre-registration is available.  T-shirts guaranteed to the first 250 registrants.  Participants may also register on the day of the Run beginning at 7:30 am. Held at the Haldeman Mansion, Bainbridge. (230 Locust Grove Road)

Relax on the grounds, tour the mansion, live music, bratwurst sandwiches, hotdogs, chicken corn soup, milkshakes, strawberry shortcake, cheesecake and sundaes.  Silent auction.  The cost for parking is $5 per car - this covers the cost of the musicians.

RiverFest 2012 will take place on the grounds of the John Wright Store & Restaurant located on North Front Street in Wrightsville, PA.  Musical entertainment will begin at 5:30PM. The featured blue grass band, Vinegar Creek Constituency, will perform from 7:30 – 9:30. Historic memorabilia will be sold by the sponsors, Rivertownes PA USA.  Food will also be available.  Please bring a lawn chair.  At dusk, as is the custom, three fires will be liet on the abandoned bridge piers that once carried the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge that was burned during the Civil War.  Admission donation is $2.00 per adult.  Children accompanied by an adult are admitted free.

The Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Area and Rivertownes PA USA are sponsoring a presentation by Stephen Runkle at 7:00PM at the National Watch & Clock Museum, 5th & Poplar Streets, Columbia, PA. On the 149th anniversary of the burning of the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War, Runkle’s will speak on “The Gettysburg Campaign to the Susquehanna River.” Profits will be used to support events being planned for the Sesquicentennial of the burning in June 2013. It’s a peachy perfect time to take a trip to Flinchbaugh’s Orchard to take in the experience of picking your own peaches during the 7th Annual Summer Fest.  Open to the public, a wagon ride into the orchards will take families and friends alike to pick their own fruit.  All peaches harvested in the orchards will be sold by the bound. For those who prefer to choose their fresh fruits in the comfort of air-conditioning, fresh peaches and other fruits and produce can be found in the Farm Market.  In the midst of its most active season, Flinchbaugh’s Orchard and Farm will also be alive with excitement for children and adults of all ages throughout its Summer Fest weekend.  Wagon rides, face painting, food, activities, exhibitors and plenty of fun!  The five-acre Corn Maze will be opening for the season.  Top off the day with one of our famous fresh peach sundaes that will leave you refreshed and smiling all weekend!  The annual Flinchbaugh’s Peach Bake Off Contest will commence on Saturday, July 28.  Interested participants are welcome to join the fun by entering an original peach recipe into the contest.  The judging will begin at noon.  Winners announced at 1 pm by a local panel of judges.  If you are not a baker, sampling of the creations will be offered at the completion of the judging.  Registration forms are available at www.Flinchbaughsorchard.com or at the Farm Market.  Prizes include $50 and $20 gift certificates to the Orchard and Farm Market.

Join us for this third annual event celebrating Shank’s Mare’s 34rd anniversary.  See local artists displaying their works on the lawn, as well as local outdoor, historic and cultural organizations presenting their information in booths along our front porch.  Enjoy food and ice cream at the Lock 2 Café, and top off the day with free live music.  This is a great day to savor the flavor of the Susquehanna with art, activity, food and entertainment.  Any artists or organizations that would like to display for our 2012 festival are welcome to contact us for booth information.

 

August 11, 2012         2nd Annual Chiques Challenge

Participate in this duathlon event which combines running and kayaking.  The event stages from Columbia’s River Park.  Participants will be transported to Vinegar Ferry Road and run along the river via the Northwest Trail and on through Marietta.  There, runners will take to the river aboard a kayak and finish downstream at Columbia.  We’ve partnered with Chiques Rock Outfitters for this event which is held rain or shine. Bethel Cemetery, children’s activities, VFW Band, lighting of luminaries and ceremony ending with the playing of Taps. Refreshments available. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held on Monday, Sept. 17 at dusk. Living History in Mount Bethel Cemetery is a fundraising event for the cemetery. Mt. Bethel Cemetery is the resting place of over 1,000 veterans from the Revolutionary War thru current conflicts. The cemetery is located along Locust Street (between 6th and 7th Streets) in Columbia, Pa. The pumpkins are orange, ripe and ready for picking straight from the vine at Flinchbaugh’s Orchard and Farm Market!  The harvest season is upon us, with our Pumpkin Patch full of pumpkins of every shape and size!  Families and friends can celebrate the season with a trip to Flinchbaugh’s Fall Fest to enjoy food, kid’s activities and specials on our products!  These two full day events will highlight the beauty of the fall harvest at Flinchbaugh’s Farm and Orchard with free apple samplings for all visitors.  Wagon rides through the orchard and to the pumpkin patch will be available.  Our Corn Maze is open too, with five acres of twists and turns, one can lose themselves amongst the stalks!  Children activities are plentiful, with the Corn Boxes, the Straw Bale 500 (a trike bike course), face painting, a coloring contest and a giant Straw Bale Jungle Gym too.  Before the kids go home, stop by the painting station - so they can decorate their own pumpkin!  Leave the mess to Flinchbaugh’s and not at home!  Or maybe folks will want to try their hand at Pumpkin Bowling!  Most activities are free of charge or minimal.   

Feeling a bit chilly, visitors can stop in the Market for free samples of fresh mulled apple cider to warm up with.  Bricker's Fresh Cut French fries will be available and various other yummy snacks.  The Market is also stocked with a large selection of fresh apples, seasonal fruits and vegetables, fall decorations and our specialty bakery items, such as Pumpkin Roll and apple fritters.

November 3, 2011     4thAnnual 5k MAG Fall Flash

Hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center

The course for this event is a popular one – it crosses the Susquehanna River via the Veterans Memorial Bridge (Rt. 462) between Lancaster & York County which is closed to vehicular traffic during the event.  Enjoy the scenic course against the fall foliage of the river valley. The Run begins in Wrightsville at 8:30 am and finishes in “record time” against this autumn backdrop.  Pre-registration is available.  T-shirts guaranteed to the first 250 registrants.  Participants may also register on the day of the Run beginning at 7:30 am.
