"Painting With The Natural Light" - A One Woman Exhibit With Carol Mangano" opens with an Artist Reception on Saturday Evening, February 5, 2011, from 5-9 PM. Carol is a plein-air artist who hales from Baltimore, MD. Her work as an art educator has allowed her to grow with her students in producing outstanding images filled with brilliant, rich hues. 21 of her original oils, acrylics and oil pastels will adorn our Gallery walls now thru February 27, 2011.

Our "A Night At The Gallery" Event for this month will take place on Thursday Evening, February 10, 2011, from 7-9 PM. Carol Mangano will be presenting a power-point presentation entitled; "Yes, the Art Teacher Painted That". She will talk about her personal growth in her art and how she strives to ignite a passion for the arts in her students.

Shank's Mare welcomes naturlists and waterfowl experts from Nixon County Park to join us for this program. We'll do a brief overview of what we may see before we set out on this easy winter hike. Our current Gallery showing opens this Saturday Evening, March 5th, with an Opening Night Reception" from 5-9PM.

"Life's Windows" highlights the oil/acrylic paintings of Lancaster, PA resident Alexis Wachter. The subjects in her paintings are simple, the items we all may use and see during our day to day lives. The colors she uses are pure and vibrant, the way Nature presents them to us. The emotions she instills in each piece is sublime and entices you to look longer, study deeper and relax in the image. Alexis capture everyday life and encases it in images to treasure time and time again.

You are invited to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Every Saturday during the month of March.

03 - 06 - 2011     Ephrata Cloister Chorus Concert in Marietta
Ephrata Cloister Chorus Concert
Union Meeting House, Marietta

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Daryl Hollinger will present a concert and dessert buffet at the Union Meeting House, 60 N. Waterford Ave., Marietta on Sunday March 6, at 4:00 p.m.

The chorus will perform musical works from several 18th and early 19th century American religious communities, including the Ephrata Cloister community, the Shakers, and African-American spirituals, as well as Pennsylvania German and American folk music.

An added attraction for the afternoon will include performances by the Reverend Mark Herr and 14 year old Eric Garner on the restored organ built in 1847 by Henry Knauff of Philadelphia. This instrument is one of just a handful of Knauff’s organs known to exist today.

The public is cordially invited to this program. Tickets are $15.00 each and will be available at the door. Advance tickets may be ordered by contacting the Ephrata Cloister at 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, Pa. 17522, by calling 717-733-6600 or by email at

Instruction in a variety of art techniques is now offered at Garth Gallery & Custom Frame Shop. Classes will be held in the Upper Gallery at 22 South Second St., Columbia.
Instructors, cost and supplies needed will vary for each course. Students should bring a lunch to classes that last a full day. Water and soda provided. To sign up or for more information, contact the studio at 717-684-0651.

Collage! March 11 6-9 pm and March 12 9 to 4 pm. Collage is an expressive and spontaneous art medium. Just about any paper can be recycled into a collage, making it a thrifty art form. Participants will make 3 or 4 small collages using found paper and paper that will be decorated in class.

Drawing for Beginner & Intermediate Level Students April 8 (6-9 pm) and April 9th (9am to 4 pm) - see full description under calendar date.

Watercolor on Yupo April 29 (6-9 pm), April 30 (9 am-3 pm) and May 1 (9am-3 pm)

Ever wonder what this area looked like before our beautiful recreational setting of today? Welcome Hollis Bedell from the Lower Windsor Area Historical Society as she unfolds the business and industrial development of Long Level. Through pictures and narrative, she'll show us how this area looked in the period of 1860 through 1910...a true heyday at Long Level. This is sure to be an interesting evening leaving us with insight into how our own spot on the Susquehanna has evolved in modern times.

03 - 15 - 2011     Easter Food Boxes
Applications are being taken in the Columbia area for Easter Food Boxes at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 5th & Walnut Streets. Please report to the church between 2:00 and 5:00 PM with a photo identification for yourself, identification for all household members and a current bill showing proof of address. All applications will be screened. Approval is based upon need of applicants and availability of food boxes.

03 - 17 - 2011     We Need Your Recipes!
The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce is producing a cookbook. This padded, three-ring book will make a great gift for bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas or any other occasion. Cookbooks are anticipated to arrive this Summer. Reserve your copy by contacting the SVCC at 717-684-5249 or email svcc@PaRivertowns.com. The purchase price of $15 each is payable when the cookbooks are received.
